Kater CLI Set up init

kater init mcp

Adds the hosted Kater MCP to your agent, for every folder.

This is step 4 of kater init, and a Developer’s first step. Kater works through your agent, so the step is required. Kater completes it when it sees your agent list the Kater MCP’s tools.

Examples

Terminal window
# Add the hosted Kater MCP to Claude Code
kater init mcp --harness claude
# Add it to another agent. It prints the address to add yourself
kater init mcp --harness other

Options

OptionDescription
--harness <agent>Required. The agent that runs this command: claude for Claude Code, codex for Codex, or other.

It also takes --help.

What it does

  • Claude Code. It runs claude mcp add --transport http --scope user kater URL. Start Claude Code again, then run /mcp, select kater and sign in.
  • Codex. It runs codex mcp add kater --url URL. Run codex mcp login kater to sign in, then start Codex again.
  • Other. It adds nothing. Add an HTTP MCP server named kater with the answer’s url, for every folder. It signs in with OAuth.
  • The answer’s then says how to start the agent again in the same conversation and sign in. Then run kater init status.

An admin’s address is the one on the MCP page in Kater. See Kater MCP.
