Kater CLI Find and understand files

kater files move

Renames or moves a plain file, or a folder with everything in it, in one commit.

It moves only within the same connection, and nothing can be at the new path yet.

Examples

Terminal window
# Go to your brainstorm folder
cd connections/snowflake_prod_connection/users/you@example.com/brainstorm
# Rename a scratch file
kater files move sandbox/unnamed_scratch_1.sql sandbox/spend_check.sql
# Rename a folder, with everything in it
kater files move pricing pricing_2026

Arguments

ArgumentDescription
<source>The file or folder to move, by its path from the folder you are in, or from --kater-root.
<destination>Its new path, in the same connection. Nothing can be there yet.

Options

It also takes the global options --json, --kater-root, --scope and --help.

What cannot move

  • Some files keep their place. Queries, charts, models, workspaces and apps keep their names and places. So do the files that Kater writes, test files and Kater’s own folders. Kater refuses them, with the reason.
  • A move to another folder needs Manager on what moves, because it then takes that folder’s access. You must also be able to add files to that folder. See Files and access.
  • A file open in an editor does not move. Close it, then try again.
  • At most 1,024 files move at one time. Move the folders in a bigger folder one at a time.

SQL files

A .sql file must save at its new place. A renamed scratch file gets its new name in its frontmatter.
