# Kater vs Hex

> Hex is where analysts explore. Kater is where the whole company gets answers.

Hex mixes SQL, Python and AI in one notebook, and analysts love it. But notebooks multiply, metrics drift, and git export goes one way. Kater keeps one governed model in SQL, and every query, dashboard and app is a file your agent can change.

## The short version

### Select Kater if

- Your notebooks give different answers for the same metric.
- Stakeholders want fast dashboards, not notebooks.
- You want git to be the source of truth, with review before you publish.
- Your warehouse is Snowflake or DuckDB.

### Stay with Hex if

- Your analysts write one-off Python in notebooks for statistical work.
- Exploration matters more to you than governed dashboards.
- Your warehouse is BigQuery, Databricks or Postgres.

## Why teams leave Hex

### 1. Notebooks multiply, and numbers drift.

Every analysis is a new project. Each one can define revenue its own way, and nobody can find the right one later.

> “it’s become easy to get lost in a sea of notebooks.” ([Hex user, G2 review](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/reviews/reviews-list/prodview-fbx3xfj7pdvog))

**In Kater:** Each metric lives once in the shared layer. A field moves there only through a promotion that the data team approves.

### 2. Dashboards are not its strength.

Hex apps start as notebooks. Users say they load slower and look less polished than dashboards in a BI tool.

> “If all you’re looking for is a BI tool for creating dashboards, I imagine there are better options.” ([r/dataengineering, January 2026](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataengineering/comments/1qhzxaw/anybody_using_hex_omni_sigma_evidence/o0pucu1/))

**In Kater:** A dashboard is one YAML file, with sections and a filter bar. Apps are HTML pages on live queries.

### 3. Git is an export, not the source.

Hex’s git export goes one way, and Hex recommends that you write code in Hex. Hex added project editing through MCP in September 2026, but the project still lives in Hex.

> “in order for me to use Claude to create a dashboard, I have to download a YAML file, modify it, teach Hex how to read the YAML file, and then reupload it.” ([Hex user, G2 review, March 2026](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/reviews/reviews-list/prodview-fbx3xfj7pdvog))

**In Kater:** Your agent edits the files directly, in Kater or in a local copy. Kater compiles each write, and you publish with kater git push.

### 4. Credits cap the AI.

Since July 2026, Hex agents draw on monthly credits. Business users who ask questions need a paid Explorer seat.

> “I don’t like the new caps on thread agent usage.” ([Hex user, G2 review, 2026](https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/reviews/reviews-list/prodview-fbx3xfj7pdvog))

**In Kater:** Kater runs no chat of its own. People ask in the Claude or ChatGPT they already use, and it reads the same governed model.

## Kater vs Hex at a glance

### Building with agents

| Feature | Kater | Hex |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Source of truth | Yes. Files in git: models, queries, charts, dashboards and apps. Every save is a commit. | In part. Projects live in Hex. Git export goes one way, and generative apps are not in git. |
| Coding agents | Yes. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor edit the files through the Kater MCP, or in a local copy. | Yes. An MCP server that creates and updates projects, with Claude, Cursor and Codex plugins. |
| Checks on changes | Yes. A write through the MCP compiles first and is refused on error. Every change has a diff, History and Undo. | In part. Version history in Hex. Git export does not work with protected branches or required reviews. |
| Answers in your own AI | Yes. People ask in Slack, Claude or ChatGPT. The agent sees only what that person can see. | Yes. Threads in Hex and Slack. Each person needs an Explorer seat, and use draws on credits. |

### Metrics and trust

| Feature | Kater | Hex |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shared metrics | Yes. Kater SQL: your warehouse’s SQL with DIMENSION, MEASURE and EVAL. Defined once, read everywhere. | In part. Semantic models in YAML, or synced from dbt or Cube. Notebooks can skip them. |

### Analysis, dashboards and apps

| Feature | Kater | Hex |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Python | Yes. Python insight templates that work like reusable macros. Each one runs over a query’s result, and your team can write its own. | Yes. SQL and Python in one notebook. |
| Dashboards | Yes. One dashboard.yaml for each workspace, with sections, tabs and a filter bar. | In part. Apps built from notebooks. Users say they are slower than BI dashboards. |
| Custom apps | Yes. HTML apps, reports and decks on live queries, built by your agent. Export to PDF, PowerPoint, Word or Excel. | Yes. Apps from notebook cells, and generative data apps. |

### Platform

| Feature | Kater | Hex |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Warehouses | In part. Snowflake and DuckDB today. | Yes. Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and more. |
| Embedding | No. No embedding (for now). It is in development. | Yes. Embedded apps on higher plans. |

## Where Hex is ahead, and why teams still select Kater

### Python and notebooks

**Hex:** Hex runs SQL and Python side by side, for statistics and modeling.

**Why teams still select Kater:** Kater runs Python in insight templates, which work like reusable macros over a query’s result. One-off Python work still fits a notebook better.

### Open exploration with AI

**Hex:** Analysts like Hex Threads for open questions over the warehouse.

**Why teams still select Kater:** Your agent explores in the Kater Sandbox, on the same governed model. A good finding moves into a workspace without a rewrite.

### More warehouses

**Hex:** Hex connects to BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and more. Kater connects to Snowflake and DuckDB today.

**Why teams still select Kater:** Kater goes deep on each warehouse it supports. Queries run live, and the compiler checks each SQL dialect before a query runs. Have a warehouse we do not support? Request it. [Request a warehouse](https://kater.ai/request-integration/)

### Embedding

**Hex:** Hex embeds apps in other products on its higher plans.

**Why teams still select Kater:** Kater has no embedding (for now). It is in development. Until it ships, apps export to PDF, PowerPoint, Word and Excel for readers outside Kater. [Ask about early access](https://kater.ai/request-demo/?intent=embedding-early-access)

## How pricing compares

**Hex:** Hex charges for each editor: $36 a month on Professional and $75 on Team, with Enterprise by quote. Business users who ask Threads need an Explorer seat. Agent use draws on monthly credits, and 50 more credits cost $25.

**Kater:** A 30-day free trial with every feature, then a subscription quoted for your team. Kater does not charge per viewer or per dashboard. Kater runs no chat of its own, so answers run in the agent your team already uses.

## Moving from Hex

Hex projects mix exploration and reporting. Move the reporting first: the SQL behind the apps that people open every week.

| In Hex | In Kater |
| --- | --- |
| Data connection | Connection, on Snowflake or DuckDB |
| Semantic model, in YAML, dbt or Cube | Kater datasets and semantic models, in Kater SQL |
| SQL cell | A query on the shared model, or a scratch file in the Sandbox |
| Python cell | An insight template, for Python you reuse over a query’s result. Keep one-off Python in a notebook. |
| Published app | A dashboard, or an HTML app |
| Thread | A question to your own agent, in Slack, Claude or ChatGPT |

Ask your agent to migrate one dashboard. Kater rebuilds it as a private draft on your warehouse, and you compare the numbers before you publish. [How a switch works](https://kater.ai/switch-to-kater/#how)

## Questions

### Is Kater a Hex alternative?

For reporting and governed answers, yes. Kater gives the whole company dashboards, apps and AI answers on one model. For one-off Python analysis, keep a notebook.

### Can analysts still explore?

Yes. The Sandbox runs scratch SQL on the shared models or on warehouse tables, in each person’s private brainstorm folder.

### Does Kater run Python?

Yes, in insight templates. An insight template is a Python function that reads a query’s result and returns findings, such as a trend change. Kater includes several, and your team can write its own. Each one works like a macro that you reuse on any query whose fields fit.

### Does Kater support BigQuery or Databricks?

Not today. Kater connects to Snowflake and DuckDB. If you run something else, tell us.

### Can we keep Hex and add Kater?

Yes, for as long as you want. Both read the same warehouse. Keep Hex for its dashboards, and add Kater to give your team’s agent one definition for each metric, your context and your access rules. When you want, rebuild one dashboard in Kater, compare the numbers with Hex, then move the next one.
